Aearwen's Little Bits - Free At Last

The first four of the drabbles I'm going to post under my "Little Bits" Title are
mevrian's fault. While we were IM'ing, she sic'ed a bunch of plot bunnies on me, left a pile of carrots on my front porch to make certain the little critters wouldn't run away, and then walked away whistling while my ankles got royally chewed. My revenge, of course, was to trap the little beasties and tame them into exactly 100 words each.
Now that I've had them for a while, I've decided I like drabbles.
But blame
mevrian for getting me hooked on writing drabbles. As a matter of fact, I'm now in the middle of carrying out a challenge to myself to write a drabble a day for an entire month. I'm not doing NaNoWriMo; what I'm working on with these is called a "Stubborn Limpet" that is unique to the Garden of Ithilien Online Writer's Workshop that I belong to.
Anyway, here's the first tamed plot bunny:
Elrond opened the velvet pouch and dumped the contents into the palm of his hand. The weight of the gold and the sparkling sapphire were considerable, but the weight of power it had contained had evaporated.
With it, he had protected his stronghold and all of those who had come to him, but no more. Vilya was dead, an artifact of another Age, of a need fulfilled.
With no hesitation at all, he dropped it into Celebrimbor's open hand to join the other two rings. Free at last - and forever diminished - Elrond reclaimed CelebrÃan's hand and walked away.
